Neon Poisoning 
When did the urge to build things in iconic shapes fade from the American consciousness? We ended up with so much cook kitchy stuff that way.Though, on the other hand, I grew up in Marietta, Georgia, home of the Big Chicken.

Well, there is a strange little desert city that has a pyramid, a castle and several European cities. Also, there are many a man still crafting their own unique places.Your question give me food for thought.
