Art Installation, Rollerderby, Etc: Week in Review

This week has been a long one of art installation at GSU’s Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design Gallery. “BRAZIL PROJECT: One River: Two Views & Palmo Quadrado” took 5 tough days to install, and left me fried I couldn’t recall the artists on display.  But fortunately I don’t have to…

…from the GSU BRAZIL PROJECT website, “…Curated by Welch School faculty member Pam Longobardi, One River: Two Views is an exhibition of Brazil-inspired works by artists Jacqueline Bishop, of New Orleans, Louisiana, and Bob Nugent, of Sonoma, California. Nugent has organized Palmo Quadrado, the touring exhibition of small works by contemporary Brazilian artists also on display…”

The different artists’ works are pretty strong and anyone down near Peachtree Center between Decatur and Gilmer should hit the gallery.

Support the arts and all that.

The much-needed break on the weekend was the Atlanta Rollergirls season championship.  Fantastic bout, marked by the best, aggressive, fast play we had seen, lots of trips to the penalty box and a final tie that resulted in a 2 minute overtime.  Final score – Sake Tuyas 104, Apocalypstix 101.

The regular season is over which means the Atlanta league will be playing its all-star team against traveling teams The Sin City Neanderdolls (Las Vegas, Nevada) , Tragic City Rollergirls (Birmingham, Alabama) , and Dixie Derby Girls (Huntsville, Alabama).

Upcoming work is setting up/tearing down a jazz show at the Ferst Center (Earl Klugh), more weekend art installation, and a day of rest.

Why I Love My Old Hometown: Fund-Raising Vegas Style

From the Associated Press

“The Clark County School District kicked off the first day of school Wednesday with scant resources. But it got a major donation from the scantily clad.

The same day the nation’s fifth largest school district began the year with some 400 teaching vacancies, the nonprofit corporation that supports it, the Public Education Foundation, accepted a $2,500 donation from a strip club, Scores Las Vegas.

‘Thank you for your donation of $2,500, received on August 30, 2006,’ said a letter from foundation president Judi Steele to Scores’ marketing director, Shai Cohen. ‘Thank you again for your willingness to support our community and invest in our children … our future.’

Scores raised the funds at an Aug. 23 back-to-school event called “Detention” that featured strippers dressed as teachers, schoolgirls and librarians.

‘It’s back to school time and you know what that means. Detention for everyone who has been bad!” one advertisement read.'”

Double Bubble Bubble Cars! Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum

Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum Panorama
Originally uploaded by Mr. Kimberly.

After all this time of thinking about tiny-car goodness in nearby Madison, GA, all 6 rechargable batteries that I took on my roadtrip were pretty much dead. So when we got to the Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum that meant fewer pictures than hoped for.

But it also meant I actually looked at all the candy-colored motorized treats. Bruce Weiner, former owner of Double Bubble Bubblegum (seriously!), is spending much money on a larger and still growing collection of microcars. Much in the same way that a puppy is cuter than a grown dog, these miniaturized-but-roadworthy cars are seriously charming. Retro fantastic and beautifully restored, this museum is a worthwhile and cheap roadtrip from Atlanta.

Weird Georgia On My Mind: Google Earth and Flickr Maps

Little did I know when we moved to Atlanta that we would be moving to a state chock full of strange museums, roadside attractions and other cultural eccentricities.  Just my kind of state!

Spending many hours (ask my wife) I have accumulated hundreds of places on Google Earth that meet the criteria to make them worth a future visit.

Some we hit during our Summer Roadtrip (pictures), like the RV/MH Heritage Foundation with its huge collection of historic travel trailers, Carhenge, and the historic Blue Swallow Motel on Rt. 66, amongst other places.  If it weren’t for Google Earth and my compulsive collecting, I don’t think we would have known about or thought of visiting these places.

While amassing the growing collection of Google Earth sites, I was pleased to see a large collection of places in Georgia or in nearby states.

Already we made the trek to the Georgia Guidestones in Elberton, GA.  This week, it may be a trip to The Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum in Madison, GA.  Eventually, we hope to go to the Georgia Rural Telephone Museum, Leslie, GA.

Just unveiled this evening on FlickrBlog is a newly added geotagged photos on a map feature.  I found it while editing some pictures, and it is great!  I like the intuitive interface — it is very easy to add my pictures to the map.  I don’t like the map itself; it’s modeled on Google Map but just not as slick and the imagery doesn’t have the resolution that Google has.  So, I now have started adding roadtrip pictures to my map. I am curious to see if Google Earth/Google Map has a project that is similar, because I’d love that.

And in a triumph, I have even converted my wife to the pursuit of weirdness.  I came home to have her tell me that she recorded a local PBS show about Joni Mabe and Everything Elvis.  Now if I can get her to break into abandoned buildings and let me fly this thing…

… I don’t know what else I could ask for.

LA's Got Nothing on ATL: Except for Hollywood…

This post has the added bonus of my sweet wife ghost-writing. In other words, I couldn’t remember all the things we did so she added what I forgot…

Last week, some of my wife’s friends from LA came to town and left impressed with Atlanta. Even though we don’t have the movie glamor of Hollywood, think about it. That would just mean Lindsay Lohan snorting coke at the Earl and running people off the road on Ponce.

We started with the “Maltese Falcon” at the Fox, following a tasty-as-always dinner at Chinese Buddha. A double-feature with “Key Largo,” we left after the first movie and headed to Cafe Intermezzo, fulfilling our guests’ desire for an excellent hot chocolate. Unfortunately I had to work during their second day in the city, but my wife showed them around Midtown and Decatur, introducing Dawn to the wonders of the Radial Cafe and Victory Vintage, and ending the day with true Southern hospitality (and blue hair) at The Colonnade.

Their last day was spent cruising the city: breakfast at the Silver Skillet, followed by Atlantic Station, Castleberry Hill, Little Five Points, East Atlanta, and Piedmont Park (and even a brief detour through Buckhead, just to show them why it’s so wrong). After a little break it was dinner at the always-unique Dante’s Down The Hatch. Boiling in oil your own dinner in a pirate-ship. They don’t have anything like that in Los Angeles. At least not that they knew of. They’d also never heard of feta-cheese-and-pine-nut ice cream, until a post-dinner dessert run to Muriel & Sebastian’s Ice Cream (Dan and the wife swear it’s much better than it sounds, but Dawn and I are chocolate purists and refuse to believe them).

While Dan wasn’t able to get the absinthe I was itching for, he did get me a related gift. Yet to try it, will report if I go crazy.

Sunday, me and the missus hit the Tabernacle to see Muse. Fantastic show, with a great sound mix that had everything sounding pretty much like the album. Since the album is pretty well produced, it was nice to see a performance that sounded as good as it looked. I wish I had a better view, but seeing that it was a packed show I’m not complaining. City Savvy Girl posted a review on Confessions of a Music Addict, complete with horrible pun in title.

And prior to all this, I had an interview at the High Museum of Art for on-call art installation work. It would be working with pieces from the Louvre as part of an exclusive loan agreement. I’m hoping that my work with the Guggenheim and its similar arrangement with the Hermitage will work to my advantage.

Blogger Boozing and Art Stuff in the ATL

Now that I’m back in town, I’m hitting the regular places for the sights and possible job ops. I’m also finding my first week back has a rather full calender.

Yesterday… ATL Blogger Monthly Drinkfest

Blogger meetup with much drinking… a bloganalia. Like usual, much drinking, laughing, dirty looks, faux indignation and maybe some crushing on our server. I’m sure more details and incriminating pictures will be posted on atlbloggers.net. One of the things that was worked on on our side of the table was a drink for Dave, who seemingly loves mustard.

“The Daily Dose”

A layered drink much like a Mind Eraser. Starting from the bottom layer up: mustard, Yager, Baileys, and chili-pepper oil floating on top. To be drunk with a straw. Yum!

Today… Tom Zarrilli Artist Talk @ The Contemporary

The show was an extension of Tom Zarrilli’s yard sale adventures, which he chronicles online at Yard Sale Addict. The show will end Saturday with a sale of most of the items on display, and a certificate of authenticity for each item. While only four people showed for the artist talk, it was an interesting one.

Also at the Contemporary, was Didi Dunphy’s installation, “Recess Playscape.”

It was far too much fun. The day before these pictures were taken , the skateboard room had 4 young kids on the skateboards, riding on their stomachs like motorized turtles yelling at their moms to time them as they raced across the gallery.
