Art Car Parade 2009 Pictures: Loads of Pix

Houston gets my love in large part due to the annual Art Car Parade. Photo websites Flickr, Photobucket and Picassa all get flooded with great pictures of the event. My shots weren’t great, but lots of locals took some great ones. Below are some of my favorites. B.S. Houston Art Blog posted some great panoramic shots of the parade by local photographer Chuy Benitez.

Lastly, I got to say I agree with NeoHouston,”…the show was great, but if they were going to change one thing, I’d have the parade somewhere between late March and mid April — or have it earlier / later in the day if it’s going to be held in May…” The heat drained me of my enthusiasm for the parade. Make it just a bit earier in the year and I think loads of people would be thankful.

Now, on with the show.

Wednesday Night Photo Post: The Odd and the Childish

This last month has been adventure-free, thus explaining my few actual blog posts. While the photoposts have been a lazy way of adding a weekly update to the blog, they were never meant to be the main content of the site. That being said… here is this week’s photo post.

Stickers from the Children’s Museum of Houston adorn the corner street signs near the venue. The closer to the main entrance, the more complete the coverage.

The 14th St. Odd Fellows Lodge. Home to the David G. Burnett Museum of Texas History. Oh, you know I got to see that place!

Elaine Bradford's "Museum of Unnatural History" @ The Houston Art League

I’ve been remiss in visiting the local art galleries. I tried to change that the last few days. Having previously seen pictures of Elaine Bradford’s exhibition, I had to go to the Art League and see it for myself. The pix aren’t quite as crisp as I would like, but they do a nice job of showing the nature of the exhibition. I liked it very much.   I also hit the Blaffer Gallery, still trying to get my thoughts around the shows there, no pictures taken there.

Next on my list, the shows at Lawndale Art Center, covered here nicely at B.S. Houston Art Blog.

NarrowLarry presents: Selected Visionary Folk Art Environments in the United States

I love weird roadside attractions, so when I discovered Houstonian NarrowLarry I was pleased. He’s a fountain of information and one of his many interests is American folkart environments. A recent visit to his site shows the welcome addition of a google map with over 100 such locations. Most of the places have corresponding weblinks and he has visited many of the places personally. A quick look at some of the Texas locations has me itching for a roadtrip. With gas so cheap, we could even afford it!

The embedded Google Map below may not be displaying correctly, a problem on Google’s part. This KML link can be opened in Google Earth and will properly display the locations that Narrow Larry has kindly placed for all to see.

Vote Early and Vote Often

Texas has the option of early voting, so me and the missus hit the polling station on Thursday. We had the kid in tow and she charmed the folks in the line. While waiting we joked about making a onesie that said, “I only smile at Obama supporters.” I’m sure all the people in line were silently assigning party affiliations to everyone around them. I know I was judging on looks.

Some people made it easy to know who they weren’t voting for.

Houston's Junklandia

The Texas Junk Company has been on my list of places to visit since I moved here over a year ago. During the summer we went only to find the owner Bob was on vacations, searching for cowboy boots in small towns and going to Burning Man.

But now I’ve made the visit three times, and with camera in hand on the last visit. Two photos into that most recent trip and the camera’s batteries gave up the ghost. *Sigh*

Someday the stars will align, the camera will be juiced up and once again I will be on the 200 block of Welch between Thursday-Saturday. And there will be many more pictures and maybe a purchase or two. But only if I have cash or check on hand.
