Home Made Ice Cream, Pet Shop Boys, Work and Play

On the start of my 6-year wedding anniversary, I sit typing after a long days work, getting done at about 11:30pm. I worked for the East Village Opera Company in the afternoon, went to an art opening at Sandler-Hudson, went back to to tear down the East Village Opera Company’s show, and came home late. The cat is eating her food, cat collar clinking on her bowl. My wife started making homemade vanilla ice cream. It was 8 minutes before midnight. On the DVR is an unwatched episode of Battlestar Galactica, waiting for me and her to watch. Tomorrow we have plans with friends to see the Little 5 Points Halloween Fest.

Now, the cat is fed, the ice cream is cooling, and the I’ve finished typing.

6 years is a good start. Great wife, nice life. Now just waiting for desert.

Fun With Friends, Weekend Puppetry Art Show, Tonight's Animation Screening

We had a friend in town and got a chance to show what we really like about Atlanta.

Over the weekend, we went to the production of the Center for Puppetry Arts‘ “The Ghastly Dreadfuls’ – Compendium of Graveyard Tales and Other Curiosities.'”  A really nice show that mixed live cabaret singing/musicians and staged marionette Halloween/horror stories. Really interesting stage craft.  And funny.

During her visit we also hit the R Thomas Deluxe Grill for dinner, Cafe Intermezzo for great deserts and hot chocolate, Nam for subtle Vietnamese  and the Your Dekalb Farmers Market buffet for the cheapest meal of the trip (3 people for $10).

As per her request we tried to show her some of the local flea markets and thrift stores, with mixed results.  Some places found online were permanently closed when we went to them.  And a few that were open were wonderfully sketchy and weirdly laid out.

Now we are relaxing and recuperating. Our friend is back in Vegas, and us chilling at home. I’m planing on seeing a screening of animated movies at the Five Spot, sponsored by the ASIFA-Atlanta.   Which I just found out about today from The Ward-O-Matic.

From the ASIFA website…

“‘ASIFA’ stands for Association Internationale du Film d’Animation. It was started in France in 1960 as a membership organization devoted to encouraging animaton. “

“Blowin’ Smoke
Monday, October 16th (7:30pm)

The follow-up to our popular “Roll Yer Own” screening. In fact, that screening has become so popular that we had to break it into two separate shows. “Roll Yer Own” is strictly non-commercial, featuring mostly student work as well as independent and “downtime” works from professionals. “Blowin’ Smoke” will feature full-on commercial work, including studio reels. It’s a chance for every one to show off what they’ve been working on over the past year, as well as shameless self-promotion!

To Hell with Hitler!

C. Martin Croker’s collection of animation propaganda from the 1940’s is sure to astound you. 13 different cartoons, 13 different Hitler model sheets from the likes of Tex Avery, Bob Clampett, Chuck Jones, and more, including “Der Fuhrer’s Face” and “Education for Death- the Making of a Nazi”!

Bizarro Saturday Morning

Weird stuff that nobody’s seen! Nobody, that is, except the collector and purveyor of all things cartoon- C. Martin Croker!

The Aqua Teen Hunger Force Movie

That’s right, your favorite Adult Swim value meal on the big screen. See it here first, with the writers, artists, producers and all other guilty parties in attendance. No weapons allowed!”

Roadtrip Weekend: Back From Savannah

A short trip was taken to Georgia’s second largest city.  Not impressed, but unwilling to write it off completely.  It paled in comparison to New Orleans, my home for 7 years.  But two really good meals held out the hope that future visits will be more promising.

Assorted pictures from the trip…  a huge dog, a welcoming church, The Scottish Rite Temple at Madison Square, and a detail shot at the Gryphon Tea Room.

Going to Vegas Again, Favorite Flickr Pix, and New iTunes Weirdness

I was talking to my friend in Vegas, who called while getting more work on his tattoo. Got to ask him what he was doing this week, because I am heading to Vegas for 3 days next week. It’s a working holiday, with the bonus of attending a friends wedding. There is talk of fire-breathing hookers at the bachelor party. Interesting!

I’m sure there will be more talk about this place after my visit. It’s the only place where I get my money’s worth in Vegas.

Dave Gorman’s story about this picture.

“…I showed her a picture.
“Can I see some more?”
I showed her 6 or 7.
“They’re very good,” she said. “Have you go any ID?”
“Yeah,” I said, handing her my driver’s licence… “what do you need that for?”
“If we stop anyone under the Prevention of Terrorism Act we have to fill in some paperwork. Do you have any possessions?”…

The big news in the Apple world was the introduction of iTunes 7. For the most part its been a smooth transition, but there has been a interesting glitch on my desktop iMac in the way it displays albums without artwork.

This is different than the way it looks on our laptop, and anyone who has the new iTunes probably can see the difference.

The Best Photographs/Art the Federal Government has to Offer – 6

From the American Memories collection By the People, For the People: Posters from the WPA, 1936-1943.

“The By the People, For the People: Posters from the WPA, 1936-1943 collection consists of 908 boldly colored and graphically diverse original posters produced from 1936 to 1943 as part of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal. Of the 2,000 WPA posters known to exist, the Library of Congress’s collection of more than 900 is the largest. These striking silkscreen, lithograph, and woodcut posters were designed to publicize health and safety programs; cultural programs including art exhibitions, theatrical, and musical performances; travel and tourism; educational programs; and community activities in seventeen states and the District of Columbia. The posters were made possible by one of the first U.S. Government programs to support the arts and were added to the Library’s holdings in the 1940s.”

The Lower the Frequency the Better Your Chances: Tickets on the Radio

I told my friend Vas that I won tickets off the radio to see Nouvelle Vague.  It was 88.5 that was giving the tickets away and he was complaining about some station in the 100’s.  Everyone in Atlanta will be calling for tickets on one of those stations. And what great crap they will be giving away (music snob alert!)

Fewer Listeners + Lesser Known Artist = Better Chances

Math so easy G.W.B. could do it.  Anyways, the show was great.  Nouvelle Vague does french-flavored bossa nova covers of Big Black, The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, etc…  Lovely singers and great musicians that took what could be a terrible concept and made for extremely good entertainment.

Unfortunately, my sweet wife was nursing a cold and couldn’t partake. Hopefully she will be able to join me for Ladytron tomorrow.  Looks to be a sold-out show.

Here’s to working hard and enjoying the fruits of my labor.

Friday Night and Super Signage

The local bloggers are meeting up on Friday for the monthly “Atlanta People With Blogs Who Get Together To Drink” boozefest. I’m hoping to make it, but Ladytron is play at the Variety Playhouse. So, I’ll probably be catching up with the kids later if they are still out.

Art Installation, Rollerderby, Etc: Week in Review

This week has been a long one of art installation at GSU’s Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design Gallery. “BRAZIL PROJECT: One River: Two Views & Palmo Quadrado” took 5 tough days to install, and left me fried I couldn’t recall the artists on display.  But fortunately I don’t have to…

…from the GSU BRAZIL PROJECT website, “…Curated by Welch School faculty member Pam Longobardi, One River: Two Views is an exhibition of Brazil-inspired works by artists Jacqueline Bishop, of New Orleans, Louisiana, and Bob Nugent, of Sonoma, California. Nugent has organized Palmo Quadrado, the touring exhibition of small works by contemporary Brazilian artists also on display…”

The different artists’ works are pretty strong and anyone down near Peachtree Center between Decatur and Gilmer should hit the gallery.

Support the arts and all that.

The much-needed break on the weekend was the Atlanta Rollergirls season championship.  Fantastic bout, marked by the best, aggressive, fast play we had seen, lots of trips to the penalty box and a final tie that resulted in a 2 minute overtime.  Final score – Sake Tuyas 104, Apocalypstix 101.

The regular season is over which means the Atlanta league will be playing its all-star team against traveling teams The Sin City Neanderdolls (Las Vegas, Nevada) , Tragic City Rollergirls (Birmingham, Alabama) , and Dixie Derby Girls (Huntsville, Alabama).

Upcoming work is setting up/tearing down a jazz show at the Ferst Center (Earl Klugh), more weekend art installation, and a day of rest.
